You'll probably won't like my answer, but NEVER EVER tan. It is the worst thing you can do for your skin. It may make you look pretty now, but it actually damages skin. You'd do better to use sunless tanners. Skin cancer is the fastest rising cancer in the US, more than likely b/c of the increase in the usage of tanning beds. If that doesn't scare you, maybe this will. Tanning ages your skin very quickly. You'll get those ugly brown age spots & freckles, then lines & wrinkes. Your skin will turn into a dried up piece of leather. At 40 you'll look like a 60 y/o prune. Always use sunscreen every day. I'm 40 y/o old. I've never been in a tanning bed (although my best friend has one & constantly encourages me to use it) I do not have a line or wrinkle on my face. Most people tell me I don't look my age. Even a Plastic Surgeon thought I was in my late 20's, that's a great complement. Bear in mind I am an extremely fair complected person & the sun would cause me more damage than others with darker skin. And my skin in very soft, not dry & leathery & I don't have those age spots. I attribute that to not tanning & consistent use of sunscreens. Good Luck & use the only safe tanning method which is, sunless.

It is different for everyone, depending on the color of your skin right now and how sensitive it is. If you are really light, you don't want to tan for too long because you will tan too long. Usually wherever you go, the people will set the timer for you. Just remeber skin cancer is still a possibility with tanning beds.
