I find that "Holy crαp, the cat's on fire!" works pretty well.

This happens to me occasionally and I am polite and honest at the same time. I have something else that needs my attention usually and I say that in a non-threatening way. If you have someone on the phone with you that doesn't accept that, then perhaps you should question that friendship.

Knock something over (preferably something noisy), curse loudly and say "Sorry!! Gotta go, the bloody cat's just knocked everything flying!" (This would work best for people with cats.) Or if you're on a cell phone, do the old "Sorry? You're breaking up!" and make some staticky noises, then hang up.

Be truthful, I am sure they have been in the same position at times. Say something like: "Listen, I would love to keep talking but I have things that have to get done, so lets pick this up later, OK?"

You know....I say oh I have to go to the bathroom. Works for me. Got to find my kids are also great during the day.

Pinch one of your kids and when they yell "Owww!!" and start to cry, say "I gotta go, (child's name here) just hurt him/herself!!!" LOL Or you could always say there's a delivery at the door or something lame like that!
