Because it is a job that requires a Calling - like a pastor's job.

jobs with a calling - don;t pay a lot.

moreover, the results are not immediate like in sales where if u hit your quota - you get fat bonus. here, the results are many years or decades away - when your student become famous.....

Actually, in comparison to other jobs paid for by public tax dollars, the teachers salary, benefits and increase schedules are not so shabby. Although I value teachers and agree people working with people in such a vital role should be paid more, it is still public tax dollars and no one wants their taxes increased. Salary schedules are set by the legislative lobbyists and district school boards depending on the market value per geographic region. Try being a social worker whose work is just as valuable and reimburse at much less although a primary role of a social worker is teaching. Most of the teachers in my area are self centered, paranoid and egotistical. I have yet to meet one who deserves any pay increases in my opinion. When a parent tries to be involved, they play politics, and are scared of being called on the carpet. I am the one who should get paid for home schooling my kid since, I have yet to see one inspire her or any of the other kids to learn and I end up having to teach her at home after work. Im not talking simple tutoring here. The merit system is a joke and waiting for teachers to retire hurts kids. Sorry, but I can only give credit where credit is due, but public school is a joke. If the school system turned out more kids who enjoyed learning, and more adults who can think, then I would gladly vote for a raise.

Teacher's do get lousy salaries initially. It requires paying your dues and getting into a good public school. For those who say teachers get paid a lot, try being one! Yes, we get the summers off, but personally I take at least 1.5 to 2 hours work home everynight and I do work on the weekends. Teachers jobs do not end at 3:00. It continues through the night. I am in a very poor district, so we do not get a lot of extra time at school. I am the art teacher, music teacher, librarian, and general education teacher. In addition, I spend half of my time creating lessons, worksheets, etc. because my district can not afford books. So, yes, when it is broken down by the actual hours spent at school, the pay does not seem that bad, but when I break it down with the additional time I put in outside of school, it is lousy.

Putting up with the spoiled, bratty, ill mannered, disrespectful children of today they should definitely be paid a much larger salary. I would never want to be a teacher. We thank them for their hard work.

Simple. Anyone's work that doesn't generate profit directly gets lousy pay. This applies in every industry.

Teachers don't work 12 months out of the year. They get days off during the work period. "Spring break, Christmas holidays, & other days off!" They get good retirment benefits. Do you supose that may have something to do w/ it?

Bullcrap, Teachers get paid very very well. The get to work contestant easy hours, no12 to 16 hour shifts, summers off where they get to sit on their big rear ends while real people get up and go to work, Christmas break, spring break, and all weekends off. While I'm going to work in a snow storm, teachers get to stay home and get fat.Teachers are spoiled. They want some pay raise and wonder why there is no money in the budget to fix the school's roof.
