Firstly, remove the new RAM that you have added. If your PC starts, then you are in good luck otherwise, take it to a service station. In case you system is booting after taking out the new memory stick, then, the problem you are facing can be explained below:-
The two sticks of memeory i.e. RAM on the PC have to be identical i.e. same speed and same size of RAM. So either change the new memory stick to match the existing one or remove the old one and let your system work with the new memory stick i.e. 256 MB of RAM although today anything less than 512MB is not recomended. Incase your system is not working with the new memory after removing the old one, then, your PC doesnot support the new memory stick in view of the reasons listed below:-
Latency issues
RAM speed not supported by your PC
If you are not comfortable with hardware related troubleshooting, I will recommend you to go to a service station or e-mail me the exact problem and I will help you out.

Take the new stick of ram out and try to boot the computer with the origional stick. If it boots up and runs then the problam is prolly that you bought ram that is incompatible with your system. OR, you could take out the old stick and try it with just the new stick. Most motherboards only hold a certain amount of ram. Such as 512MB. What that means is that if you have 3 memory slots, you can only have a total of 512MB. It is possible (if 512MB is the limit) to buy 1 512 MB stick and use it on the motherboard with leaving the remaining two slots open. Thus making those two slots basically nonexistant. On the other hand, a lot of motherboards regulate how much ram can be in each slot. Limiting you to certain possible combinations of size of the ram chip. Best thing to do if your a do it yourself type of person, (if the computer boots with one of the two methods mentioned above) would be to get the information on your motherboard. Find out what it's limits and what it regulates are. Then go from there. You can take the model number and the brand off the motherboard, and do a search for them on either yahoo or google. Sometimes you can go to the brand's website and get the infromation from there. Hope this helps:)

Try doing a system recovery. When you are finished, your computer will look just like the day you bought it. Save anything that you need, because it will delete everything on your hard drive. Here is how you do it, very easy..When you are booting your computer up, tap the F-10 key, and it will get you into system recovery. Just follow the prompts on the screen, should take about 35-40 minutes. Remember to turn your firewall back on, in control panel. Then go to start and do windows update, use express mode, activate your anti-virus, so it is safe to go back on the internet. I got these directions from a computer tech, years ago, and I have done it 3 times, and it works great. Good Luck..

provided which you (or a chum) can do it your self - workstation? plenty extra complicated. If I asked "Is a 7 12 months previous motor vehicle nicely worth repairing?" would not you purely sigh and shake your head? If the vehicle have been an audi with 10,000 miles on it and a undesirable radiator or a jeep cherokee with 230,000 miles on it and a undesirable tranmission and leaking head gasket the respond would be somewhat distinctive, huh? Open the hood. attempt turning it on. See if there is any ability popping out of the ability resource. examine continuity of the ability twine. no be counted if that's ability resource, then you could in all probability discover somebody who has one (on an previous laptop) they provides you loose. they are low value. if it particularly is the stressful stress, then you will get a style of for style of US$a hundred (in u . s . a .) yet do you have the (homestead windows) working equipment on a disk? the rest (different than wires and such) i'd trash the ingredient.

Hard to say without the model number and honestly anyone else would just be guessing.

Is it Windows XP? If it's not or Windows 98 odd's are that is an older model.
