A firewire device only plugs into a firewire PORT which has to be on your PC
Yes, it is true that almost all older computers do not have a firewire port and hence you would not be able to use your firewire device. However, most of the new computers come with this port and almost all laptops do so to.

Most desktops don't have firewire. Most laptops do. USB pretty much won that war. It plugs in wherever it fits.
