I do not find money motivating because I do not want materialistic items. The only reason I want it is because I want to retire early, which is hard to do. So I ask, is working hard in school worth it in the long run even if I do not want the money that might come along with it?

i had the same mentality....as if bankers and brokers and those in the financial world only cared about getting rich. dont make that mistake.

instead consider this philosophy, if you at some point down the road find yourself with some money, not a lot, just a small chunk to invest.......what are you going to do, pay someone else to invest it and hope it works out later, or will you have the knowledge and understanding of the markets to invest it wisely yourself.

now, being much older, i understand the importance of having something in the bank. not because i want a new car every year, but because i know it will take care of me later. and thats peace of mind, and it cannot be bought or sold.

Of course it is, because eventually you'll need to pay off the tangible and very materialistic MEDICAL BILLS :p

You probably at least want to be successful enough to support your family some day don't ya?

Or hey latch onto whatever you DO find important and go with that. Like to smoke out? More money you have, the more of that you have. Like to enrich the the lives of others, donate, etc? You can do much more of that if you are successful. Like to play video games, so on and so forth.

Basically money is connected to everything...and you're smart enough to equate that to your retirement and the desire to retire sooner. The only way to do that with an intelligent approach is to go to college and get a good job.

Or hey, be a rebel and go to college for the education itself ;)

You can retire early, especially if you're not materialistic. You probably won't waste your money on cars, etc. Just live on a certain % of your income and invest the rest. I think the hard work is still worth it.
