When you are researching a subject you have to decide the scope of what you are researching, i.e. the extent of the area of the subject matter that something deals with or to which it is relevant. So you have to set limitations for yourself, boundaries.

For example, if you are doing a research paper for a literature class, you might limit the scope of your research paper to the romantic period. You could further specialize by limiting the scope to only a few authors and then poetry or prose.
