I had to read this for my AP english course. I can't say much without going into the symbolism in the book. But in a nutshell, he's an oddball. He's blind to the trap that he's walking into. He's guilty (vericose ulcer- symbolism of connection to past). He's an idealist. If you need anything else, check out www.sparknotes.com and under literature, check 1984.
