Here's a few that most won't list: Les Paul, Django Reinhardt, Chet Atkins, Lindsey Buckingham, Stanley Jordan, Steve Lukather, Marc Bonilla, Al Dimeola, Trevor Rabin, David Gilmour (o.k., some will), Larry Carlton, Steve Morse, Kerry Livgren, George Harrison, Ian Bairnson, Elliot Easton, John Sykes, John Mayer (now). Sure, there's lots more, but I'm too tired to think right now.

Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Chuck Berry, Keith Richards (Rolling Stones), Kurt Kobain (Nirvana), Stevie Ray Vaughn, and so on.

Jimi Hendrix is probably the absolute best though. Eric Clapton is probably the best one alive.

Tommy Emmanuel for me... this Aussie guitarist will simply blow you away... his finger style playing (much like a piano), stunning virtuosity, amazing harmonics, and ability to play upbeat fast songs as well is slow emotional songs to perfection... I mean, he practically shreds on his acoustic guitar!
Other honorable mentions: Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Pat Metheny, Clapton, Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Robert Johnson, Jimmy Page, BB King, Freddie Green... etc...

My favorite: Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Jimi Hendrix, Jimi Page, Buck Dharma, Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, Jeff Beck, Michael Hedges, Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, there's more...

Actually, I think Vai is in his own class due to his extraterrestrial skills as a performer and composer.
