Just fed our little corn snake a pink no bigger than usual and it ate it backside first. Now it looks like the pink is up to the front legs and may be stuck. Will he be able to get it down or do I need to do something?

I've never witnessed him/her eat yet he always eats after we've gone to bed, so I don't know if this is normal or not. Maybe I just worry to much.

Usually snakes can eat their pinkies with out any problem. Keep an eye on your snake for a few more minutes. If the snake is crushing the body of the pinkie, then it will eventually get it down ok.

If you have to remove the pinkie, be prepared as the corn snake may bite you once you get it out of its mouth.

Good Luck :-)

Generally snakes, corn snakes in particular, can consume a mouse larger than their body diameter without any real difficulty. As someone already suggested, if the snake has too much trouble with the meal it will then regurgitate the mouse.

Normally the snake eats the mouse head first but some snakes do seem to have a backwards aspect to them and will tend to go with the tail end first. Because of a small air tube that the snake can extend near the front of its mouth it isn't going to suffocate while swallowing a large pinky. I would just give it some time.

Please note, this does not apply to boa constrictors which, when young, should not have to tax themselves to swallow something anything large, in relation to their body diameter as they can stress out and die from the experience.

So long as you are dealing with a normal pinky mouse your corn snake should be able to handle it.

When it comes to eating mice of any size, it really doesn't matter if the snake starts head first or tail first. They can usually complete swallowing the food item without difficulty, it just may take them slightly longer to get the meal down. As long as the prey item is of a suitable size, it really should pose no problem.

Snakes take several minutes sometimes to completely consume their food. Give it 30 minutes, if it cannot chew all it has bit off, it will spit it back out, and you should probably use a smaller food to feed your corn snake until it grows.
