Yes they can live without plants. Most things that plants do can be replaced with something else. Many fish need plant matter in their diets, but they can get that from the proper flake or pellet food, and from algae growing in the aquarium. Fish also need plants to divide up territories in the aquarium, to give them places to hide, and to block some of the light to the bottom of the aquarium. But, you can use fake plants for this. Plants also absorb ammonia and nitrate from the aquarium, and produce a small amount of extra oxygen, but weekly water changes can do this too. So, basically, they don't need plants, but plants make everything easier.

Some fish need plants to eat, some fish need plants for cover. The latter can use artificial plants. What types of fish you have or expect to purchase should be investigated first.

NO, FISH DO NOT NEED PLANTS IF YOU HAVE AN APPROPRIATE AIR FILTER SYSTEM. HOWEVER THEY ARE GOOD FOR PROTECTION AND ALLOW "SHADE" FOR SOME FISH WHO LIKE TO HIDE. THERE ARE A LOT OF FAKE PLANTS THAT LOOK REAL AND COULD ALSO SUIT THIS PURPOSE.

HAVE FUN WITH YOUR FISH!

no if they are in a fishtank and you have an air pump.
plants give off oxygen but attract bacteria when they die (means less oxygen because the bacteria use it)

in the ocean/lake plants are necessary for oxygen (especially algae & other microscopic plants)

plants help add oxygen to the water and give the fish somewhere to hide or for hatchlings to protect themselves.

It is good to have plants in the fish tank. It gives them a place to hide - and makes them feel secure.

To answer your question, yes - they do.
