Does the consumer spend more money because of advertisement?

Apparently, most advertisers see us as illiterate, sexually motivated, easily swayed consumers. I can honestly say that the only ads on television, in magazines or elsewhere, that have any affect on me are the ones with humor. And they just make me more inclined to read or watch, not to buy the product. Those that use sex as a selling point are especially annoying to me simply because they expect you to believe that if a consumer buys their product that they will be awardrd some phermonal aura.
