She tells others in our community and through accquaintances that we have done numerous things that we have not done. She says we stand outside her house and stare in her windows. she says we "Collect" children becuase we are adoptive and foster parents, she says we tried to pose as her and steal her identity. While all this is untrue I don't know what to do. I have never had anyone spread lies about me like this before. She tells my good friend that I am trash. I am hurt, confused, and angry. When do rumors stop being rumors and start becoming definmation of character?

Well the people that she told rumors to; if you are good friends with them or acquaintances and they start acting strange around you ask why they are acting strange around you and if they say the trash she told then tell them that it's not true and if they are true friends they should believe you. Also you could be civil about it and ask her politely to stop spreading rumors.

If your neighbor tells these things and know them to be untrue, and you have witnesses that have heard your neighbor say them, the lies have ruined your reputation and maybe has caused damages (such as causing you to lose your job or home, or other financial damages) then it is defamation of character.
I would send your neighbor a nice letter "no threats, or abusive language" and let them know you have heard things that "may" have been said, and you would like them to stop. If it does not stop, then seek a lawyer.
She is probably just rude, and you may not be the only ones she is talking about. If this is the case, no one would really believe her anyway.
Whatever you do, do not cause any thing bad to your neighbor whatever she might say, because it could backfire and get you in trouble.
Hope this helps, and good luck with her.

When the liar lies, someone needs to flat out tell her that they know she is lying. She keeps doing it because she gets away with it. Have you or anyone else confronted her? Don't be accusatory or say, "you lied about..." Instead clear up the facts with her. Let her know what she is telling people is not factual, and you'd be happy to talk to her about any concerns she has about you. Seeing that you work with kids in "the system," these lies could potentially hurt you and the children you care for. They need something stable, and your neighbor is putting them at risk. Let her know that you care for them and you want to make sure that others aren't misinformed about your character because it could be grounds to have them taken away, possibly to a horrible situation. She needs to see there are consequences for many others when she lies. I would hope that she doesn't get personal satisfaction from hurting children. If she has some problem with you, clear that up as well.

You know what? I swear there is a wacko like this in every neighborhood. Unfortunately, there is not a lot you can do about someone who spreads lies. You have to just live your life (find friends and support outside of the neighborhood), and wait for people to figure out that she is lying. They do, eventually, if you dont get caught up in the drama. Hopefully she will be gone soon.

Unfortunately they don't. They are technically here-say. If you are that bothered about her gossiping, which is what she's doing...the next time you see her go over and talk to her about it. Not confrontation-ally, you are neighbors and are stuck with each other. Ask her with a smile why she told so and so what she did. Maybe you'll embarrass her into keeping her gos-sipping mouth shut. You, on the other hand get the satisfaction of seeing her face as she squirms from embarrassment.

I would confront her and ask her why she does the things she does. I think that it is unfair for her to do those things especially when there are parents out there willing to take in children and give them a better life. Good for you! Move to Wisconsin because we would never judge you like that! At least where I am at. Good for you. Don't let the witch get to you! I am so proud of you!

The truth is stronger than the sword, if all those comments are lies, then get a lawyer and sue them for defamation of character or something, but make sure they are false statements.

Sure, you could sue in defamation, but it would be difficult to prove, cost a lot and you would probably not receive substantial damages/compensation.

My ideas:

- Spread lies about her, beat her at her own game.

- Try confronting her, ask her why she is lying. Try threatening her with litigation or physical harm.

- Ignore it, people will probably realise she is full of sh*t after she continues to spread untruths.

sounds like she's got mental problems... seeing or hearing things that are not true.... can't think of the term at the moment.

You could mess with her and have mannequins just outside of her windows at night.... or hang mannequins from a tree in her yard.... or have one under her car as if she backed over a person and have fake blood everywhere. and have police tape all around the yard and chalk outlines on her sidewalk to make it look like someone was murdered in her yard.

Write her a very civilized letter asking her why she keeps bashing you. Be sure to always defend yourself, no matter how uncomfortable the situation can be. Sounds like she has her own issues to deal with.
