Starting JANUARY 7th 2007 a passport is REQUIRED to enter the United States. So, basically you can go to Mexico, but without a passport, you won't be able to RETURN to the United States! So, dont get stuck in MX!!! Get a passport if you will be there after January 7th.

oops! I have to edit this, just found out that the requirement date for passports has CHANGED, it is now January 23rd, 2007. You can enter Mexico without it, but it will be required to get BACK in to the United States.

You don't need a passport until 2007, but its best if you get one to travel now. It makes your traveling and going through customs a lot easier. If you need to travel asap and don't have time to get a passport, you can travel with you driver id and a birth certificate as well.

Right now you need your ID and your birth certificate or a passport. Starting December 31st of this year you HAVE to have a passport to get back into the US, so I would suggest getting one.

Ask the airlines ... they are the ones that control you getting on the plane or not.

No you don't need a passport ... but why not get one .... is this the only trip you'll ever make
