Mainly a user who knows what they are doing! The hard drive along with other hardware has an effect on how fast the PC runs. Amount of Ram, processor speed, etc....

Greetings. My name's Sanjay Patel, and I currently hold an honorary Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. I am aware of, and have personal knowledge related to your question. There are computer maintenance businesses which are probably in your area, however they come at the cost of hiring a professional to enter your home. There may also be some local destinations where you can drop off your computer and wait to have a technician look at it. These options can often be costly, and pretty inconvenient. The answer to this question can probably be found doing a little extra research on Google.

A well-running computer can be a hard thing to maintain. From my experience, there is but only One software which is reputable- and consistently reliable for healing sick, slow computers. Reimage™ is a world-renown, easy to use software designed by Forensic scientists and made for the average person. This thing will fix literally just about ANY problem you could possibly be having with your PC. Reimage was recommended to me by a Professor during my 2nd year of Graduate school.

Hard drive access takes a lot of time in relative terms. Buying a faster hard drive with better access time might help, but once the data you need is read off the disk it no longer is dependent on the hard drive speeds. Times that this is really a factor is when you're loading a large program, booting the operating system, reading a large video file off the disk.

A computer may run slow for many reasons. This includes insufficient RAM. If you don't have enough RAM the computer writes extra pieces of memory to your hard drive, which I've already mentioned is slow.

RAM speeds also vary on the type of RAM you use.

Processor clock speed also has a lot to do with the speed of your computer. Thats what the 3Ghz is all about when they talk about computers. Thats not all though. AMD operates differently from intel processors because they use a different bus, which actually allows them to process more information. There are tons of other possible bottle necks to computer performance.

Well there a alot of things that make a computer run fast. Just about every piece of the computer plays an important part in the speed of operation. If you had the worlds fastest processor in your computer but 1MB of memory you would not be able to even run an operating system. Conversely, If you had tons of ram and a processor that ran @ 1MHz, not only would the ram would not benefit you but your computer would be slower than the speed of smell. Like they say, a chain is only as strong as it weakest link. Likewise for computer, it is only as fast as its slowest component. But to answer your second question, yes, a hard drive has to do with the speed of you computer. Typically, the status quo of hard drives, in terms of speed, today is around 7200rpm. I believe the speeds vary from 4300rpm to 10000rpm. But, a hard drive can only access information a fast as the processor asks for it. If you suspect a "bottle neck" in the operation of you computer related to the hard drive, you may want to look at upgrading to a newer and faster one. Although, these days a decent computer goes for pretty cheap. So it is not really worth upgrading a new one as the technology used a year ago is almost out of date.

a fast processor, alot or ram, and yes a hard drive does have to do with it also... Hard drives have different speeds such as the speed that it spins, the cache which is memeory, and also the cable type... SATA is newer than the old IDE ribbon cables

a fast computer 5 years ago would be liek this

450mhz processor
128mb ram
10gb 7200rpm hard drive

Todays faster computers are liek this

3,400mhz processor
1gb ram
200gb 10,000 hard drive

Ok. Let's keep this simple. 4 things make your computer run faster...1) The processor (try to get a 3.1: very fast).
2) Ram (Random Active Memory). Get 1 Gig.
3) A high speed internet connection. DSL is a good one. (digital service line).
4) Do your homeworks: defrafmentation, disc clean-up, scanning with your anti-virus and ad-aware and spy-bot etc...Get rid of programs and files you don't use or need. Do your up-dates...

the processor (aka the brain of the computer) controls the speed of your computer. this is the most important part regarding how fast your computer is. unless you have a custom built computer, 9 times out of 10 you can't upgrade the processor. secondly, the amount of RAM (random access memory) you have contributes to the speed of your computer. the hard drive only affects the speed below all three of these things when you have very little space available.

**to the kid who posted about the "terabytes" of ram, you will NEVER need that much memory nor would a computer running the windows xp operating system support such a thing. a 32 bit processor can support a max of 2-4 gb of ram. when windows vista rolls out in january the 64 bit version will allow several gigs of ram, but that will only be needed by serious gamers and hardcore multi-taskers.**

Back a couple years, it was dependent mostly on the CPU and Memory, these days the GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) has about as much to do with speed in areas such as gaming. A good mix of CPU, Memory, GPU and FSB speed is desirable. And if playing say, an online game like Counter-Strike, a fast, low latency connection is vital to a good experience.

I am running an Abit MOBO w/800 mhz FSB, 2 gig of Corsair matched ULL memory, a P4, 3.2 ghz CPU, an ATI X800XL Pro graphics card with a Seagate 120 gig HDD primary and a WD 80 gig slave HDD.

For general computing a CPU of decent speed and about 1G of RAM are a good basic start.
Maintaining your Hard Drive (defrag) and shutting down programs that don't need to be running helps immensely.

For gaming a high end CPU and 2G of RAM is best and the same here about maintaining your hard drive and shutting down programs is a big help.
