i know a little about electrical work but i have a question. we have the common white, black, and ground wire from the house, and then for the ceiling fan its a white(netural), red(for the light) and black wire. i was just wondering what wire the red one hooks up to b/c i know white goes to white, black to black, and ground to ground. what about the red one?

Sounds like you are replacing a light with the fan/light, your 2 black2 and red will go together you'll have to pull the string on whichever you want to turn off or on, the One Black wire is connected to the switch, so when the switch is on BOTH will have power to them if you do not hook up the red your light won't work on the fan.

The red wire is connected to the black wires with a wire nut. One black wire operates the fan and the red one is the power to the light accessory.

it is a power wire for your lights
it will connect to your black wire that comes out of your box in the ceiling

White is right , Red you are Dead. And black will not give you a Crack"as in a big spark"
