Get plenty of fresh air and exercise during the day, if you're not physically tired it's much harder to sleep.
Have a routine, go to bed and get up at the same time each night and morning.
Cut out caffeinated drinks after 6 p.m. Save stimulating activities for earlier on in the day. To feel sleepy you need to wind down so as the evening draws on have a warm bath, afterwards change into night clothes and maybe have a small snack and drink if you need one.
Make sure your bedroom is comfortably warm and dark. Don't watch T.V. in bed and make sure there is no clutter on the bed.
Really important - don't drink (alcohol) or smoke in excess before you go to bed. If you do when it wears off you'll wake up and find it really hard to go back to sleep.
Don't worry too much. If you're fretting about something that can be sorted get up and do it. If you can't, then forget about it til tomorrow.
If you use chamomile tea instead of tea/coffee you will feel the difference (more relaxed)

Well normally I would recommend more natural solutions, but a lot of them are already posted here. I would like to add kava kava 84% extract capsules, and passionflower and some of the calming teas to the list.

There is also the pharmaceutical/drug option. I've found that actually an old antihistamine called diphenhydramine (benadryl) works best for me, 75mgs does the trick. However zolpidem (ambien) (via prescription) is also good. Also smoking some fine bud will help you wind down. The above three options are your best bet. But try a variety of things and see what ultimately works best for you. You'll eventually gain a tolerance to both benadryl and ambien, to the point where its like you took nothing other than some minor side effects, same with the herbage (weed, kava, valerian, etc).

The best thing is periods of vigorous exercise in the day, and establishing a set sleeping pattern if possible.

you need to develop some sleep hygiene. You need to get a night time routine and stick to it. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. avoid anything with caffeine after late afternoon. Do not eat/drink a couple hours before going to sleep. Avoid watching tv an hour or before going to bed. If you can't fall asleep within 20 mins get up and do something like read...and try to go to sleep in 20-30 mins. Exercise this helps insomnia and depression. Depression and suicidal thoughts are actually more common than you would think for people in your age range. If you don't think you can talk to your parents about it, talk to your guidence counsler and they will help you. Talking over things with someone who can help you problem solve and show you a different prospective is more helpful then you may realize. From one girl to another girls are crazy at your age. One day they are your friend, the next they are not for no apparent reason. Find some new activities and meet some new friends.

Insomnia is an illness, you cannot treated without medication or therapy. The over the counter stuff is just for a quick fix, if you are really suffering form it, you need to see your doctor. It is a real problem that needs professional help. Good luck, I hope you get it sorted.

It might not work all the time, but a boring old movie will do the trick. I was watching Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce last night in The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939), and it is so well made, but the pace of the story telling and all that dialogue... I was ZZZZZZZZ in no time. Another one that will do the trick is any of the Godzilla movies from the sixties and fifties.

there's a lot things you can try. I have done the child's pose and it helps slow down my mind and relax me. It's a yoga pose. Look it up and give that a shot.

You can also take Valerian. It's available at your local health food store. It helps a lot. Ask someone at the store to tell you more and if it can help you. Camomile tea also is good before bed. It has a calming effect.

good luck!

Try going regularly to a yoga class and then practicing the breathing techniques at home before bed time. This should help to relax your body and mind.

Warm milk helps you sleep, there are also many prescription drugs you could try but I would use those as a last resort. Try lying still with your pillow over your head. That helps me.
