You are correct, there are many elementary teachers, but you can make yourself more employable if you get dual certification in both elementary and special ed. Teaching in grades 4-8 can be very rewarding. Junior high students are a lot of fun.

Choose the grade that you have most experience in, and the one that you most enjoy teaching. If there are no jobs available, maybe you can try something that is available. You never know, you might like it. If not, you can still always move on.

Special Education in preschool is a great fulfilling field. Or even a speech teacher who teaches Autistic children sign language or Occupational therapy Teacher who teaches disabled children how to tie their shoes and brush their teeth.

You should get certified in elementary and special education ...it will give you a lot of flexibility. Unfortunately, in most areas you can't choose which grade you want. Usually you end up with what is available.

I teach middle school and I find it very rewarding. If I had the opportunity to go back to school and pick an education major I would stick to the basics. Reading, math, and science.

Volunteer in classrooms of different grade levels to see which you like best. It won't be worth getting a job more easily if you are miserable doing it. Good luck!

While I like Kamsmom's reply, from an economic perspective, specializinng in math or science education will certainly make you a hot commodity when you graduate.

Like in any job - u must have the passion.
teaching is about that..... and more.
there are two major elements - the subject content and the children/ students you are teaching.
some like to deal with young kids, others like to deal with older teenagers.
so weigh carefully.....
