It is a nice idea, but a 46 year old will have more difficulty being admitted into med school than a 20 something. It is not discrimination. It is just the fact that they spend a whole lot of time and money training doctors. They can choose from someone with 20 years to practice medicine or 40 years to practice medicine, one is generally a better investment.

But if you are speaking of yourself, go for it. In my med school class, we had a one student who was 40 something (out of over 150 students). It seemed to be more difficult for him. He had to repeat a year, but he finished and is now a doctor. Once you get in, they will do everything to help you pass and get through.

I worked with a 2 differents doctors who were not "your conventional" students. One was a former teacher and got his medical degree at the age of 40 and the other was a Colonel that attended medical school after he retired from the army (22 years). Any thing is possible! I'd say go for it!!

Yes it is, there is no age limit in learning what you have a calling for...if you don't you will wonder for the rest of your life why you didn't pursue it... Go for the gusto... I always say. If you think about it, most doctors retire at a very old age...If you want to be a doctor, that's at least 8 years of medical school...you can practice for at least 20 years...wow, you will still have a lot of life to live after that at 74...People live longer these days...I am going to say Good Luck to you and follow your dreams....P. S. you have to be strong because a lot of people will try to discourage you..Don't let them....

I'm not tryna done your idea but i wouldn't recomment it. Since you are already hitting 50yrs old, thats the time to wind down as far as all that stress of school related work. Medical school is know to people very stressful that people who went told me, so for if you wanted to put that stress on you it might not be good for your health. Another main reason is about time you finish medical school and go through all the training you won't be far from retirement, and they would prefer to have younger doctors in their 30's, trust me I've seen it before. I'm not saying don't go to school ,but for medical school that might be harder to deal with, you can persue other things suchs as home business (networking), which people do to create something form home that they don't have to work like slaves and they are their own boss, and they have enough money to take care of things, and resentual money comes from that, so you don't have to worry about retirement checks.

If you want to go to med school because it may be a nice idea, you're all wet. If the prospect doesn't fill your mind and imagination day and night and you feel that you just absolutely have to go, then you don't need to. Find something else to do which will be more fulfilling and will give you the interest you must crave.

Why not? There is no age limit on a person to stop learning. I finally got my Associates Degree in Accounting when I became 50. It took me 20 years to finish college, but I did it. Other things were going on in my life, so I took classes when I could.

Your teachers will think you are the doctor sitting in class monitoring them.
Fellow students will think you are a doctor.
Fellow students will seek out your advice wise one.
If you have the energy, and stamina do it. What age will you graduate? - Is that when most people are retiring?
I would worry about being hired because of my age.

But In all seriousness though,
Pursue all of your dreams! Do not let other peoples thoughts affect your decision.
