Freezer works for me, too.
Be careful, I have had two break in my hand trying to pry out wax with a knife. Use a butter knife and a towel to hold the votive holder while digging.
Also, spray the holders lightly with Pam (or similar lubricant) before putting candles in. The wax should just slide out.

Next time put a little water in the votive before putting in the candle, and/or spray with PAM or generic cooking spray. Try pouring boiling water over the candle holder, when it is in a colander with a coffee filter at the bottom. Do this in the sink or over a large bowl or similar container. You don't want the wax going down the drain, and you don't want to scald anyone with the hot water. I'd put a bowl in the sink, then the colander, then the coffee filter, then the candle stick, then pour the boiling water. Easier to dump the wate when it cools. You will have to work with the wax while it's hot, so wear rubber gloves to keep from burning yourself. Good Luck!

I tend to re-use cute votive [store bought] cups too, and found that to remove old dried or stuck wax I could FREEZE them and then gently pick it off with a butter knife...then let them soak in HOT, HOT boiling water for about a minute or two.
Try this, it usually works well for me.
Good Luck.

Stick them in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Then usually the wax will fall right off. If not you might get a knife and it should pop right out!
Good luck

Let them sit in a double boiler until hot and then take them out and wipe them down with paper towels. I melt all my "leftovers" down like that and buy new wicks to make more candles. You don't waste any of that leftover candle.
