The "aberration of nature" that frightens Scout is Boo Radley. In chapter 8 of the book, Miss Maudie's house catches on fire. Everyone in the neighborhood, including Atticus' family, gathers outside by her house. Since it is kind of cold, Boo Radley puts a blanket over Scout. Later, in the house, the family realizes that it must have been Boo Radley that put the blanket over Scout. Scout, realizing that Boo Radley had been behind her, nearly throws up.
To Sir J: Don't ruin the book for others that haven't finished it (I'm not talking about myself; I read this book four years ago).

I think it was the "hot steams" or something like that. They are some sort of spirits that come out at night or something. I read it last year for school and I remember a question similar to that. It's almost at the end of the book.
