1/(3 + √5) =
1/(3 + √5) * (3 - √5)/(3 - √5) (on multiplying the numerator and denominator by the conjugate of (3 + √5) as (x + y)(x - y) = x² - y²)
= (3 - √5)/(9 - 5) (as 3² = 9 and √5² = 5)
= (3 - √5)/4
