Of course you're able to walk again, but it will take awhile, sometimes up to a year or more. A successful repair involves completely replacing the torn ligament, and there are a number ways that this can be done. Your doctor will determine the best option.
Once the ligament has healed, the next step is to work the muscles around it to avoid this happening again. Muscles control the movement of the knee joint. Rehabilitation of these muscles is most important following an ACL injury or reconstruction.
This is a long process required to get back to normal, but not an impossible one. Of course, it depends on the overall tear. But just a note, if you pay attention to NHL hockey, Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings had a completely torn ACL and came back to play hockey. Until he finally retired last year.
Good luck

Navigator, the ACL is an important ligament. It does greater desirable than shop the femur from sliding over the tibia. It does an important function, that of conserving the femur and tibia mutually. without this ligament the meniscus of the knee take a brutal punishment. The femur pistons upon the meniscus thereby breaking them down. persisted placed on on the meniscus capacity that they placed on away. This created greater pistoning and erosion yet now that's to the underlying cartilage of the knee. as quickly as that's long previous then that's bone on bone that's somewhat painful and restricting. confident you may function without this ligament even with the undeniable fact that it capacity that the knee would be risky and likely you will might desire to have an entire knee alternative years till now it slow. So the only genuine thank you to nicely known only how quite some a tear is modern-day is by MRI. This test will demonstrate the degree of tear. If the tear is at 50% or greater desirable you will prefer the surgical fix. no count number if that's under 25% it is going to heal. The iffy variety is while the tear is closer to 50%. Strengthening the knee will help in the two case for in case you do no longer prefer surgery it is going to stabilize the knee. in case you do prefer surgery the capability will practice you ways to rehab swifter. ascertain you strengthen the hamstrings as they're the muscular resembling this ligament. by the sounds of it it sounds greater like a grade I sprain.

wow haha i just had surgury on mine last week. yes you can walk again... before surgury i walked with a limp for a few days-weeks but then i could walk on it... soon i acctually could just about run... but i couldnt squart or anything because with the right twist or movment or lift you could damage it more by tearing the meniscus, or more if its already torn. usually with acl injuries they are though. But when you get surgury it will hurt i will not lie. It has been a week and i had just gotten my staples out, i have a brace, ace bandage on it now, and this is really the first day i can kind of walk on my leg, but still with some crutch support. you will walk again but follow doctors orders because it could be torn or injured or whatever. it will take around 6-8 or more months to finally get back into vigerous things such as sports and cutting and lifting and squating. but it will take a few months before walking is fully back... if you want more info check www.wikipedia.com and search acl reconstruction and you will get tons of info... good luck if it happened to you... if you just were curious then there ya go...

My 16 yr old daughter had this about 2 yrs ago. They waited until she was old enough to be of her adult height and then it was operated on.
She had to take several months off from sports and is now back competing at an international level in Karate.
You should be fine.
