There are plenty of mature workers out there who are just as qualified as any relatively younger employee, but ageism in the workplace is still common. Any thoughts?

Some jobs cannot be done by older workers, and older workers don't want some jobs. Not that they aren't smart enough, but let's say that you are doing heavy and hot type of work. Naturally the older worker most times cannot and will not want to do it.

But someplace like Hooters doesn't want 50 - 60yr old women waitresses either.

Easy. Older people may have the experience, but want to command more money. When the employer knows they can hire a 20 year old to do the same job for less money and train them their way. It happens a LOT.

Whether a lawsuit would go through, I highly doubt it.

it would be a hell of a legal feat to make an actual case of it... you can legally challenge any hiring process, bu it takes time and money to do, and odds are the employer would win out. You need to aim for jobs that require a lot of experience... they tend to be looking for someone older.
