You mean STEEL...not "steal" as in to take something without permission.
Most filing cabinets are made of compressed carbon steel, very few of any [ever] have been made of aluminum metal, and then you also have your SAFE-type of filing cabinets which are a whole different ballgame in of themselves but you can always check by looking for the manufacturer plate that they usually stick on either the back of the cabinet or inside one of the drawers [in the back] which will tell you who made it and sometimes but not always; their name generally gives it away.
SOMETIMES but NOT always.
As in the case of say a company like Alcoa Aluminum which has products that LOOK like carbon steel but really are aluminum, or say Bethlehem Steel which does make carbon steel but has products that LOOK like aluminum [giggle--confusing huh] or you can simply check the box for that info as well.

Metal ones are almost always carbon steel.

use a magnet if it's steel it will stick if aluminum it won't
