It's not absolutely true anymore. I know couples who share equally. In my own marriage I discovered that my husband (we were business partners) handled about 60% of business & myself about 40%. At home it was my 60% & his, well a little less than 40%! lol But that was how I liked it. I did the laundry, cooked, etc. because I'm better at it & I like to run my own household.

EXCUSE ME?!?!?!?!?
NOT ONLY do I help my wife with the care of our 3 year old autistic son, I do almost ALL the cooking (my wife only knows how to cook macaroni and cheese, eggs, and quesadillas), but I also do all the dishwashing by hand, I clean the kitchen, I clean the fridge, I vacuum the floors, I take care of the leftovers and freeze them if there's enough so all we have to do is take a bowl out and microwave it. I make sure that the brats in the neighborhood don't jump our fence at night (which scares the daylights outta my wife) but of course, I'm usually awake until midnight anyway. My day starts at 7-8 am, and doesn't end until midnight EVERY night. Anyone who doesn't think that there are men out there who pull their own weight AT HOME........
obviously hasn't met very many househusbands.......

My dad worked 15 hour days just to come home and make supper. He made our school lunches and his own lunches. Can't remember what my mom was doing.
Anyhow, it IS nice that you help your mom. Men should always at least pitch in. Some don't know how to clean or do laundry (I know it sounds odd, but it's true), so they need to learn. But if nothing changes in your house , just try to keep helping out and telling your mom how awesome she is. Thoughtful words go a long way.

My family is the same way. Well, in Bangladesh, that's just what's traditional there and they brought their customs here. To me, it's an old way of life... one that should be avoided if somebody is unhappy with it...
I think the people in the household should be able to do things equally and not just assign each other roles just because of their gender.

Which is true in a lot of situations, but not all. Hopefully this will give you insight when it is time for you to choose a partner. If you want it to be different then it will be.

Would you prefer that your mom have the label "househusband" and your dad wear a dress?

It doesn't happen that way alll the time. I know of a few Mr.Mom's, where the roles are reversed.
