For respect the first empress wanted to be called empress because it notified the people that she was married to the emperor and she had some power to.

Aren't they an "empress?" Though I think in some cultures they just refer to them as the "wife of the emperor." In one case, in Ethiopia if memory serves me right, the Emperor's wife was called a Queen. If I can find the website I'll post it.

Well, it depends on the different countries. In England, one might call the emperor's wife a queen. Although it would be a King. But like in China, it's an emperor, and in the old days in China, an emperor would have as many as 20 wives and lots and lots of kids. Each one would be called a "fei zi" that's chinese. But there would be a main wife and that would be called the "huang hou". There's no word for "fei zi" and "huang hou" in the English language because in the American and England and most countries they only have one wife. But in China a man could have as many as he want.

Normally they are referres as the wife of Emperor ......

but you also have the: title of "empress" may indicate the wife of an emperor (empress consort) or a woman who is a ruling monarch (empress regnant).
