More memory (RAM) will definitely speed up tasks on your computer... A gigabyte of RAM makes drastic improvements and with the price of a gigabyte of RAM hovering around the $100.00 mark (check www.newegg.com) it is an intelligent decision to allow you to keep your computer for a few more years.
However If you don't want to drop the cash (who does?) there are a few simple things you can do to speed up things on your machine. Defragmenting the hard drive does make a difference, but you will not be freeing up memory... Defragmenting allows you to get data off the hard drive quicker but thats about it....
To truly free up "memory" on a Windows based computer do the following.
1. Click the start menu then click "run"
2. Type the words "msconfig" in the "open" field then click "ok"
3. Click the "Startup" tab and then under the "Startup Item" column start looking for suspicious tasks that are hogging your precious memory
4. Examples of these memory hogging tasks are: qttask (Quicktime task), iTunesHelper, realsched (real player scheduler ) and on and on.... use your judgment to decide what does not belongs on that list.
5. Uncheck the boxes next to any tasks that shouldn't be there.
6. Click "apply" then "ok" and finally "restart"
7. When the computer restarts you will get some warning message... check the box that says "don't tell me again" and your set!
By following these instructions you will be disabling any hidden tasks that start when you turn on your computer. By choosing to have these tasks not run you can save memory and speed up boot times.
I hope this helps!

The only way to get more memory is to install more. You can free up disk space by defragging your hard drive. This will also help it run faster because it will put your virtual memory in one location on your hard drive.

Delete old unneeded files if you want to free up storage space.
To make the computer go faster, however, you'll need to look at upgrading your RAM and/or CPU if it's the system's not too ancient. If it is however, you'll need to upgrade the whole system. i.e. get a new computer.
