If you upgraded from Windows 95, 98, or Millenium, you need to go to your sound card mfg. website to download the correct driver for W2K. What happens is, you actually change your file system from FAT(16), or FAT32, to NTFS.
NTFS is a totally different file system, and is not compatible with the FAT system. You may find further problems; errors, or not being able to start certain programs, etc. Just do the same, go to the website of the manufacturer of the hard/software, and they will have a driver for this other file system. FYI, W2K and all the XP's,Vista, the newer OS's are all NTFS formatted, so you might as well get used to doing this - or, buy ALL new s/w and h/w that will run on YOUR new machine. Have fun...LB

I wouldn't call 2000 an upgrade. It has terrible hardware support. You'd do a lot better with XP.

check if its on mute
if so unmute
also try control panel-sounds
there should be something where you can change hat type of sound source you have, depending on your computer, such as stereo speakers, headphones, speakers, depending on what you have
