Yep like its been said here before, higher levels are more physical. You can also improve your game by being more crafty. Just as great strikers learn to anticiapate defenders, you need to learn what strikers are trying to do.
Anson Dorrance use to play Mia Hamm at defender to teach her to be an attacker. She said it was the best training she ever had.
Headers and body positioning. Its a tough spot to play, any mistake you make looks very bad. Some defenders will give ya some tricks to think about when ya get the basics. The fake stomp is good. Also daring a player to go to your right when that is your strong side.
So learning to cut mistakes and recover from them quickly will help.

im a defender at a varsity level. its actually really differnent then any kind of soccer i've ever played. basically if u wanna get better as a defender and get onto a big name team, make sure you are physical, play smart and have good techqnique. I suggest playing with older kids that play a high level of soccer, it will teach you even more.

Find a brick wall, just a plain brick wall will do. Kick the ball at targets on the wall, volley the ball, headers etc. It improves your first touch a lot.

can you "head" it? and blocking it with other parts of your body would be a plus too.
