He won't know what you are giving him anyway. I think you should give him a very special Christmas ornament. It will be hung on the family's tree every year, until he has his own. He will always remember his aunt gave him his first ornament.Hallmark has some cute ones, but you should get something in silver that is engraved with the date and some sentiment from you.

Anything appropriate for a 9 month old will be fine. Toy packaging will be marked with appropriate age ranges, so that's easy. I would lean toward educational/developmental stuff. There's no gift like a head start at learning to make the rest of their life that much easier.

Go with something which is wooden and traditional and aids development. It's way more original than a run-of-the-mill Fisher-Price toy or similar (and also means your less likely to get him something that someone else gets him too).

He might be a little young for something which aids walking at the moment, but if he's not on his feet yet, it'll come in handy soon. That would be my recommendation - the toy which helps him get walking will always be remembered.

Hope this is helpful

Find out what they need! In a week or 2 find out what the parents need. Maybe they didn't get something that would really help them take care of him. Or give money to start a college fund! (I know it sounds boring now, but it will be seriously appreciated 18 years from now) Toys listed at 3+ mos Clothes one size larger than he's wearing at christmas time. (My 3mo old is wearing 6-9mo clothes, so I'm hoping for 9-12mo clothes at christmas, he's really big!)
