Does anyone know if a rats digestive system is affected by injesting caustic soda a.k.a. sodium hydroxide? I have fed them bread with a liberal amount of butter and covered with caustic soda and they keep coming back for more.

A small amount of sodium hydroxide is probably neutralized in their digestive system. Plus, if you are adding it to a butter, you may actually be reacting the caustic with ingredients in the butter (fats, fatty acids, etc...) which will just make the butter salty. Also, caustic soda reacts with CO2 in the air to form Sodium Carbonate pretty readily, which is harmless. I'd try another "poison".

Caustic soda will react with HCL to produce table salt. The butter possible protected them from any burning on the way down. They may have high blood pressure.
My Daughter drank saniflush when she was about 2. The antidote was milk of magnesia, once it connected with saniflush it became inert.
