A propane tank generally is NEVER totally empty of propane gas which is why they don't allow you to discard them just anywhere for fear of having them pierced and or explode causing severe damage or even death sometimes.

But regardless of the SIZE of the tank--be it a gas grill type or a home-heating-huge-tank type--there is NO pat answer because each state has their own ENVIROMENTAL LAWS and rules on this.

So the best response would be to CALL your local enviromental agency and ask them.

Or call the propane company who either sold you the tank or actually ANY propane company really, could answer you as to what is the proper procedure to discard an old one correctly--if they don't [then it would be interesting to see why not and how they discard theirs] know how to answer you, then they need reported.

Since Propane companys CAN'T SELL WITHOUT ALSO ACCEPTING BACK the tanks they sold, or knowing WHERE to go to discard them...so they would know the laws and bylaws of discarding "empty" ones.

Having said that I commend you for even asking this question in the first place since few do.

They simply either throw them away in a dump [unbeknowningly to landfill workers--VERY dangerious] or go out somewhere and dump them, which again is extremely dangerious, ILLEGAL and contaminates the ground as well. Or simply abandon them where they sit.

Which is why you see so many sitting around on properties not being used or just there.

Hence the demolition of gas stations and gas companys or lines is an extremely guarded and monitored event because of the risks of life while removing or discarding old sites and materials where gas was used, not to mention the contamination of drinking resources and ground water and soil.

So although this was not [I'm sure] what you expected it's the only SAFE response to your intelligent question.

Hope this helped.

How old? pre overfill valve style? Is it empty? Do you still use it? The "new" overfill preventer valves can be bought an installed at a propane dealership. (thou the new valve costs as much as a brand new tank. If the tank is completely empty, a wrench will unscrew the old valve, then remove. Take the two pieces to a junk yard, or auto wrecking yard.

Just leave them set at any propane exchange station. They have to take them per law. Kind of like waste oil. If they sell it they are obligated to accept them.

Turn them in to a place that sells that brand. Not sure if you can turn them in to a place that carries a different brand. Lots of gas stations, grocery stores, wal-mart, lowe's, etc. carry them.

Just take it to your local gas dealership where they refill and they will dispose of it for you.
