It basically depends on the lease itself, and the property. Some masionettes only charge ground rent, whilst having terms in the lease which make all the leaseholders jointly responsible for the upkeep of the communal areas/building itself. A person living in a 1st floor maisonette may be solely responsible for the upkeep of the roof and the person downstairs may be solely responsible for things like the foundations etc.

The estate agent should be able to tell you what the ground rent and/or service charges are on a particular property you're thinking of having a look at.

Yep, afraid so. If you r on leasehold, which i presume u r, then u do not own the land your maisonette is on so therefore your landlord (owner of the land) can charge u a service charge. Always best to buy freehold if u can.
