My children have also done the puzzle piece ornaments, only a bit differently. They glued the puzzle pieces to a pice of poster board that had been cut into a triangle. Then they painted it green. Then they used glitter paint and drizzled it to look like garland. Then they put sequens on it. I still have them.
I've done volunteer work at the local museum and the children made the cinnamon/applesauce ornaments. Mix equal parts cinn./applesauce + some white glue to help bond it together. Roll it out and cut with little cookie cutters. Put a little hole in the top, let dry completely, and hang with a ribbon or string.

There are so many ideas for kids. A good one is the old fashion string the pop corn and then hang it outside on the trees, you are also feeding the birds during the winter months.
Another idea is to have them make their own Christmas cards, it just takes some construction paper, fold them and they can cut out ornaments and glue on the card.

I have the perfect project for you. The sock snowman! You will need one white tube sock, one 16oz bag of red kidney beans, markers, rubber bands, and a two inch long; qaurter inch wide strip of scrap fabric; the more colorfull the better, per child. To assemble the sock snowman you pour beans into the sock and then place two rubber bands along it to form the three snowballs of his body. A big ball on the bottom, medium size ball in the middle and small ball on top for his head. Tie off the top part of the sock with another rubber band. The top tube part of the sock will then be hanging out of the top part of his head. Trim this hanging part untill just enough is left that you can fold it down in half so that the edge is level with the head, this will be his hat. Next tie the fabric around the neck of the snowman like a scarf. Draw eyes and a mouth on the head. Then let the kids use the markers to color thier sock snowman however they would like. Hope this idea is usefull for you!

Here's a funny little craft (this can be Christmassy). Take shells and paste googly eyes on them, creating happy clams, shocked starfish, etc! For a Christmas touch, add a santa hat on the head :)

I would suggest buying plain white ornaments.
I know kids love getting dirty with the glitter, so get some glue sticks and different glitter colours!
I also use fabric paint to put flowers and designs on them. So try that!
[also, if you're looking for wasting time, wait until it snows and mix dyes in with water and put them in a spray bottle so the kids can run around the yard and shoot it at the snow to change the colours of it.]

We (my daughter and I) made snowman heads out of White Chocolate covered Oreos.
Use mini chocolate chips for the eyes, cut off the bottoms of gumdrops for earmuffs, and cut little slivers of orange gummy candies for the nose. Mouth is optional. "Glue" the items on with white frosting.
Very easy, very fun, and very cute!
Have fun!
