A couple authors who actually committed suicide: Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf. Each extremely depressing, if that's what you're after.

However, I'd recommend that you try to read something that would counter those feelings. Nothing schmaltzy, I promise. Try Gitanjali by Rabindranth Tagore, which is a dialog between Tagore's soul and God: lover and beloved. You will never think about God or perhaps yourself, the same.

If that's not your taste, try Gary Snyder or Galway Kinnell. Snyder first: nature is as much as you or I and you can find everything there. Nature is Kinnell's theme, too, but he'll show you the dark side.

We're on a journey, my friend, to help God discover Himself and us, and I really can't think of a greater insult to Him than murder.

To me, the beauty of poetry is being able to artfully find the words to create the pictures that touch your soul with clarity and truth.

Such depression as you describe reaches into the soul and exposes the emotional raw nerve. The poetry that results is truthful and salving to the writer. The pain and futility evident in the weary steps of the words is reaching out to others for comfort and succour in an attempt to end the loneliness of the abyss into which they feel they are headed.

Some of the most heart touching poetry in our century has been written by tortured souls.

If you want to read an emotional book, try Go Ask Alice. It is the true story of a suicidal teen.
