i just got my first period on Thursday and I am currently having an underwear problem. Everytime I go to bed my underwear gets soaked in blood and so far I had to throw 5 of them out. No use in washing them since the blood is dried already. How can I prevent getting soaked in blood? I already have supersize pads but they won't solve the problem of getting my underwear soaked. I couldn't visit my best friend cause I was afraid I might soak their bed. Why Why did I have to get my period now??? And also why do women get periods? Do our hormones cause this?

I always wear a pair of shorts to bed. They keep the pad in place. I don't know why you are throwing your underwear. You can wash them in detergent and bleach if they are white. They clean perfectly. Women get periods because when we hit puberty, we can have babies. Every month there is an egg which is being released for fertilization. When there is no sperm, and the egg does not get fertilized it is then flushed from the body. We get periods because the uterus has prepared itself to receive the egg, and must shed it's lining since no egg has attached to the walls. You will get used to this. And through trial and error, will find something that works for you.

I have extremely heavy periods also. You may not like my answer but it is the only one I have found that works. Depends. Yes, the adult diapers. They have some that are like undergarments that slip on or they have ones with tabs you can attatch. I had a hard time mentally with it at first but it was either that or washing the bedding every day. I got used to it and it didn't bother me. Even during the day you may have some leakage that doesn't go all the way through to your pants. I have underwear that I use just for my periods so that I don't have to use the good ones. That way you wont have to continue buying underwear. Also Oxyclean works really well on the blood stains. I have found that Ibuprofen or Aleve works the best for the cramps. If you try the products for menstrul cycles, might try them on the weekend they tend to put me to sleep. Sorry you are so unhappy about it I wasn't very happy either. I hope these tips help.

You may need to get up out of bed, and go change your pad in the middle of the night. Or it may be a problem of getting the pad in the proper position on your underpants, or using the x-long pads. As for your underpants, don't throw them away. Use the same ones each month then you don't stain every pair. I have "period" underpants and the others for the rest of the month. All you need to do is put some hydrogen peroxide on them as soon as you see the stain, then wash them as you normally do. This is a trick nurses and dentists use to remove blood stains from clothes. Oxy laundry additive is useful also. It seems you have a lot of questions about your body and how it works. I think finding a female family member or a trusted friends mom to help you might be the thing for you to do.Remember the only bad question is the one you don't ask.... Good luck

Good point in the underwear thing. I would keep a couple pairs for next time. Ummm I dont really know what to tell you since you already have supersize pads. Only to make sure when your lying on your stomach and back that it pushed back (laying on back) and pulled forward (for stomach). I know I had this problem too. And it sucked. Don't worry you will eventually get the hang of it.. Unfourntely. It's a womens curse and we all have to go through it.

Two thoughts:
1. Use a tampon and a pad.
2. Are you placing your pad further back at night (while you are lying down on your back), or further forward (if you are a stomach sleeper)?

I remember this happning a lot to me when I was young. As I got older, I got better at controling the leakage. Can't remember the last time I leaked!

Welcome to the curse of womanhood.

Women get periods because their body is preparing for a baby. The period is the end of the cycle (usually 28 days) where the body is flushing out the lining that coats the uterus for the baby. If there is no baby, the body cleans out and starts the process over. Yes, horomones cause this whole process!

ok, try getting pads with wings that protect the edges of your underwear. also, you may have to use tampons at night. i do b/c i too bleed too heavy for just a pad to work at night.

as far as why women get periods, it's b/c every month, your ovaries release an egg that goes into your uterus and waits to be fertilized. also, as this is happening, your uterus build up i lining for the potential baby to attach to. if the egg is not fertilized, the lining is shed and that is what your period is. try this link to better explain it, and if you can't ask your mom, try asking an aunt or maybe a friends mom that you feel comfortable asking. all women go through this, so they will understand what you are feeling.

Honey just double your overnight pads. Not one on top of the other but just aline them, one in front and one in back. This should do the trick. Also wear form fitting underwear so your pads stay in place and not move around when you are sleeping. Isn't it a BIOTCH! Well hang in there you will get through this.

If it's bleeding that drastically, you should see a doctor. Try stacking two pads and try not to wear a tampon unless you really need it. You should use a tampon if you sleep less than 7-8 hours a night. And if you DO put on a tampon, but it on right before bed. But only use the tampon if it's completely necessary.
