A home router is best if you wish to connect multiple computers to the internet. It provides firewall protection, internet sharing, and allows you to connect multiple PC's together without having to worry about network IP configurations, local firewall configurations on every PC, and figuring out how to set up internet connection sharing.

Yes, there is. Your router can act like a hardware firewall, blocking some Internet hack attacks. You may have to flip through the router's administration web pages to turn it on, but it's worthwhile as a first line of defense. Note that it still doesn't replace a good software firewall on your computer. You can exercise much finer control with a software one. Hope that helps.

A router shares a connection (like the Internet) with multiple computers.

Who told you that you need a router. If you have a LAN switch (or even a hub, but consider switch) will suffice. router is more expensive and it wont do you much good at home since you don't need that kind of routing (you simply can't do routing from home).
HUB - just sends the data in all directions (only one gets the data)
SWITCH - Can learn where the (LOCAL) computer is and send him the data.
ROUTER - can do that a switch can unless you want to connect more switches, then it routs the message, that is its job

Other from this. Theese machines don't do.
Every software that additionaly comes with them is usualy available at the market.
You don't need to configure networks with Windows (it does it automaticaly) but with other OS you will have to even if you use a routher (especialy then because they have their own IP adress)

Unless you have more than ONE computer you don't necessarily NEED to use a router.

However, routers CAN provide good firewall protection with the software that comes with them.
