Hi.
I have a 9 month old son and my health visitor has advised me to wean him of the bottles. hes already having solids.
He can drink pop out of one, but it is very hard for him to drink it as it comes out to quick, so i think it would be hard for him to take his milk out of one.
Is there any specific age they have to be off bottles by? and what are the best cups? he has a tommy tippie one at the mo for ages 6m+.
Thanks.

obviously it isn't adult pop, what kind off mother do you think i am?
Its the baby squash that you dilute with loads of water or he has just plain water.

Don't give him anything other than milk in a bottle. My son was having drinks with meals from a cup as soon as he was eating solids and now at 12 months he only has one bottle at night before bed. I know everyone says no bottles after 12months but its a nice quiet time for us when we cuddle up on the sofa after a long day and relax together while he has his bottle, this will end sooner or later but I'm in no rush.
From about 9 months he was dropping bottles out. First was lunch and dinner time as the solids were filling him up fine then eventually the monring one dropped but not until about 11 months as he was waking up hungry and didn't have the paitence to wait for breakfast to be ready! He would also go back to sleep after that but like bottles they need less naps as they get older!
I never gave him milk in anything other than a bottle as I like to know how much he has had but like I said anything other than milk was in a cup.
Try the 'any way up cup' type things as they have to suck harder to get the water out and thats what they are used to doing with bottles.
Stick to water, don't bother with even baby juice!
And finally, chill. He isn't going to be drinking out a bottle forever! Well I have seen 3 and 4 yr olds with coke in bottles but lets not go there!
Your doing a good job, keep it up!

In general, it is a good idea to plan to stop giving the bottle around 12 months of age. The main reason for this is once children have teeth, using bottles, especially at bedtime, can lead to cavities. The earlier you start the process, the easier it will be. However, all toddlers are different; some switch from the bottle to the cup easily, while others want to hold onto that bottle for dear life!Tommee tippee have the best range of cups around. Try using some different ones to see which one your son prefers.

Why is your health adviser advising you to wean him off the bottle???? He will learn how to drink out of the no drip sippy cups if you offer them. Usually a baby is weaned by 1-1 1/2 years old from the bottle due to the problem bottles cause to teeth. Anyways try the no-drip sippy cups as that does not come out really fast they still have to suck to get anything... Good luck, and I did not automatically assume you were giving the child soda-pop, I figured it must be juice. lol.....

I would hope that you are not giving a 9 month old pop out of any cup that is not good for them. Also who is telling you to wean off the bottle? Your child is only 9 months old. You could try some sippy cups, but don't push it too hard. It might be too much for a baby to handle.

My daughter went right from breast to sippy (at 5.5 months). Nuby has a three stage sippy, the first looks like a nipple but the suction is different than a usual nipple. The second is the usual rectangular type sippy spout. The third stage looks like a long nipple in more of a straw shape and uses the same suction as a straw. My daughter (who will be one next week) drinks her whole milk in the third one and has both milk and water throughout the day in actual straw bottles (like the foogo thermos). She was able to master the proper straw suction because of the third stage of the Nuby sippy. I switch the nipple every six weeks or so. I highly recommend these sippy cups! Either way, I would continue to wean her to a sippy... she'll sure eat/drink when she's hungry. Good luck!

First off doesn't it really irritate the crap out of you when people keep saying the same freaking thing. I understand. You just want to scream SHUT UP!!! Even if you do it's your business. None the less. I know youre supposed to wean them at 12 months but I wouldn't think it was a probably for him to drink out of them now. My daughter is 8 months and she drinks out of her sippy cup but sometimes the flow is too fast. I know after 12 months I've known people to gradually dilute things they put in a bottle so they won't want it. There are exceptions to the rule. My friend's son drinks out of his bottle and he's 17 months. He refuses to take his cup even though it's 3/4 water 1/4 milk!!!!

I had this same concern. The "appropriate" age is 12 months. Let him get used to the sippy cup first, give him a month to play with it learn it, etc.I started my daughter on sippy cups at 6 months only to get her used to the feel, etc. and I only put water in it. I did not push it. When you feel he is ready then my suggestion would be is to switch 1 bottle to1 sippy cup the 1st week then 2 then next and so on until he is completely weaned.
Babies are all about slow and easy transistioning. You know your baby better than anybody so go with your gut intstinct.

I was told to take my son off of the bottle at 12 mo. I started with the sippy cups that have straws. Then I moved on to the ones without the straws. I'm in the US, so I'm not sure if you have them, but Take & Toss works great! if you leave something stinky (like my son's soy milk) you can just throw the cup away. They're cheap

I don't understand the rush to wean him off a bottle. He is a baby, even if he is on solids....however I made the switch to the cups with two handles, so they could hold it themselves. I would be more concerned about the fact that a 9 month old should not be having pop....maybe thats just me.
Good luck

wean shmean. at one year my son started drinking milk, and i immediately threw his bottles out. for about 3 months he kept a sippy cup of milk with him in bed, but hardly drank it, and now he only has a cup of water in case he wakes up. (he's 23 months now)
you think that your baby will care more than he really will. at about a year, he won't be old enough to be so attached that he'll throw a fit. give him a cup for security reasons, tell him that's a big boy and bottles have to go away. my son physically helped put the bottles in the garbage because he was excited about bringing a cup to bed.
