I think personally, to learn the basics of how a manual transmission works, including the clutch system FIRST. Then, with the newly acquired knowledge, utilize it when grasping the skill of how to co-ordinate clutch and accelerator usage. Learn how to downshift LAST. Hope this helps.

It would be to some advantage, but not absolutely necessary, if you already know how to drive before trying to master the skills involved in stick shift.
Two things are of prime importance when learning to drive a stick shift car. The first is to have someone with a calm, reassuring personality teach you. The second is to insure the calm person is proficient at driving with a stick shift. I taught both my wife and daughter to drive stick with little difficulty.

pactice on the driveway of the closest police station you can find, and NATHAN got it all wrong dude, you have to practice but later on when you get the hang of it, you should only use the clutch to START (take off), because if you learn to combine braking with the engine and the BRAKES you have better control of the car.

Go to a large open area free of obsticals and practise yourself. you will only get better if you practise. Tip: always use the clutch when braking.
