Animal totems can be with you from birth, or can come to you at specific time periods in your life, leaving when they have fulfilled their task. The owl is a magnificant symbol, yes. I am a holistic practitioner and light worker. I use totems when I do readings for others and for myself. In this case, this is what I am getting for you from this experience.
You are going through experiences that are allowing you to become wiser (the decision to stay with your boyfriend could have been a big and significant one, and it could be a bond that will last)... it also means that you are involved in some way with the spirit of nature and the wise woman of long ago. You are interested in mysticism, magic, spirituality, and finding out more about life in general. This totem has chosen you, to make you aware, that the time is now, to follow through with things that have been on your mind, learn about and start to experience what you have been dreaming of, and talk to those around you more openly about who you really are.

OWL: Cherokee [Indian] shamans viewed Eastern Screech-Owls as consultants on punishment and sickness. The Cree believed that the whistle-sounds of the Boreal Owl was a summoning call to the spirit world. Other Native American traditions hold that the owl represents vision and insight. In Africa the owl is associated with witchcraft and sorcery. Australia, China, Greenland, India, Indonesia, Japan, Russia and Sweden all have cultures or mythical traditions that give spiritual significance to the owl. Probably one of the most bizarre occurrences of owl symbolism can be found at the "Bohemian Club." Find this and more information at Wise Old Owl

Well, yes, the presence of an owl indicates that there is a food source around. Squirrels, mice, rats, voles etc. are all food sources for owls, so it's likely that they are abundant around where you live. Owls were associated with the Greek goddess Athena, in her role as goddess of wisdom. Some way-out-there fundamentalist Christians believe that owls represent some kind of occult or evil power ... I have NO idea why that would be, honestly. There really aren't such things as omens or portents or things like that. Enjoy having this small bit of nature so close. Owls are very beautiful birds, graceful in flight. And very useful at controlling the "vermin" that can be annoying or harmful.

owl - seeking the hidden white magic - If Owl on strong majestic wings has flown into your world, She knows that the time has come for you to seek that which was hidden. Arcane knowledge deep within the ageless traditions of white magic will now reveal itself if you quiet your mind and take the time to explore the mysteries beyond with a guide or those who have the same mystical goals. Like Owl, you will absorb benign and nourishing, and discard that which is destructive. the web connecting the world and the universe to planes we can not even see will become clear, and imbue your life with intense meaning. on a material level, Owl counsels that you look far beyond the surface actions of others. If you trust to your own intutitions and perceptions, others will be unable to decieve you -- their hidden agendas will be as clear as a folwer in sunlight, and Owl's wisdom will be yours. ( quote from page # 101 from Animal Wisdom -Harness the Power of Animals to Liberate Your Spirit written by Susie Green ) hope this helps as normally I do not quote from books but made an exception in this case.

Sounds like the owl chose you to be your totem. Although in some places the owl is a bird of evil omen, owls are the wise birds who know how to cope with both life and death, and the practical little things that can make ordinary life magic.

It depends on which way the owl flew when it took off.Sometimes symbolism represents past present and future events such as a warning from a relative who has passed on into the spirit world. But mostly it means that they have to eat too and you should have respect for them and to pay more attention to the road instead of each other.

In our native culture you are right about the owl bringing news of death, but it has to be in a certain sequence of events which I will not share with an unbeliever. No creature is viewed as bad. The owl serves its purpose as a messenger. In your case you have nothing to worry about.

The ancient Greeks considered the owl as a symbol of Sophia = Wisdom! Now, how the incident you mentioned applies in your particular case, I don't really know but it never hurts to be careful and wise; and particularly so when you are in love!
Have a good one!

Owls are symbols of the night, the moon, and the goddess Athena, Queen of Wisdom and Knowledge. Owls are generally solitary, as far as I know, which I don't really. They have a long life-span.

The Cherokee believe the owl is the messenger of death.
My Native name is "Snowowl", and I think the owl is the listener of things that are not heard, the see'er of things that are invisible. They may be the messengers of death, but if I know you are standing in the path of a train and tell you to get out of the way and you ignore me, does that make me the messenger of death? Or does it make you too deaf to listen to the warning?
