I need to know what the laws are in NC and what requirements there are to start this type business. My speciality is teen/parent and husband/wife conflict.

Good for you!

Can you check with the local law school, Child Protective Services, Domestic Violence programs, Child Advocates, Justice for Children. Better Business Bureau, Small Business Administration, or your local Family Court.

If you start off as just a "consultant" in a field, you can work independently under just a DBA, or even under your own name. (This is the simplest set-up for tax write-offs, the others require more documentation and record keeping.) I would start with something simple, while you research business incorporation.

In Texas, you need certain licensing before you can call yourself a "counselor." But anyone can be a "consultant" and work as an independent contractor under a DBA registered through the county.
