Its really too small for a salwater tank. You could do a mini setup with some live rock and invertibrates, but no fish. A freshwater species tank of dwarf puffers or small shell-dwelling ciclids might be fun. I really like the idea of making it a small terrarium with half land, half water and lots of land and water plants. You could get some very small amphibious frogs, and maybe even some small cool water fish like a colorful variety of white cloud. It'd be your own little mini ecosystem.

The best thing to go with is a tadpole. You can watch it grow up, and change it's habitat and feeding accordingly. Be careful though, make sure your tadpole species doesn't turn into a really big frog, too big for your tank. Fire bellied toad tadpoles are good, since they don't get very big, or require much. As tadpoles, get a bunch of aquatic plants, tadpole food pellets, and a heater and all is well. As it grows though, get some branches for when they develop legs and start leaving the water. Then, change the habitat to a 1/2 and 1/2 (land and water) one.

Get a couple fire bellied toads! They are cute and less work then a fish tank. Plus up to 4 can live happily in a 10 gallon tank!

it depends on what kind of pet you want to nurture...for me as a hobbyist try to have fish, for that small type of tank youre not gonna have a hard time cleaning that a little filter w/ pump and reflector light will do..for a tropical type of fish just add a water heater and it will do fine...
