You are on the beach. What are you more likely to pick up? A shell or a pebble? Any particular type or colour? And any particular reason?

I always tend to pick up pebbles, especially the ones that glisten or have different colours. Shells smell and are usually broken, I've never seen a decent shell yet!

it depends where you are standing, the rocks further up the long shore drift of the coastline, and the height up the beach that you are standing.

Clay, chalk and limestone all produce pebbles, as well as shell debris. sandstones were laid down in deserts, so you are more likely to get nice sandy beaches. add to The mixture the modern shells from more recent shellfish, then it really is a bit of a lottery.

however, the same debris falls in the same area, so navigators off shore with a lead weight, and wax, can tell where they are in the fog.

There are more pebbles than shells on most beaches. I pick up the pebbles because they are much better at trying to beat my record of skimming off the water. Shells are rubbish for that.

I have a friend who collects shells. She makes them into necklaces and sells them. (She does declare the revenue on her tax form, honest).

A pebble, the nice flat type to skim along the waters edge.

Depends where you are. A pebble beach needs much stronger currents than a shelly one.

A pebble with a hole right through it - they are hard to find and I always like to look for one!
