Scale that accumulates in pipes is formed from the calcium and magnesium salts of soap and carbonates. It tends to accumulated because as it washes down the pipes the water is losing heat and the amount of the salts that can remain dissolved is reduced, depositing the salt in the pipes as scale.

This is why you see far more scale in the drain pipes than in the source pipes for your shower or bath.

If you live in hard water areas, such as Central Florida, where the calcium and magnesium carbonates are above 160 parts per million (ppm) you should flush some lye (Sodium Hydroxide) into the drain about once a year to keep the scale down. Be careful. The Lye reacts strongly with water and produces a lot of heat and splatters. It is poisonous and you don't want to get it in your mouth or eyes.

Scale is formed inside of heated containers because some of the minerals that are dissolved in hard water become insoluble when the water is heated. It is a calcium carbonate.

I assume that you're talking about 'Limescale'.

Limescale is the hard, off-white, chalky deposit found in kettles. It precipitates from the calcium and magnesium ions in hard water and it flows through pipes.
