This has to go to the Beatles. Without them none of the band you mention would have ever existed. They set the standard by which every other band is measured.
Elvis Presley set the all time standard. Then came the Beatles. After that the Rolling Stones. Every band since is nothing but a rip off of these 3 acts in one way or another.
That said when you ask this kind of question you have to mention which genre of rock.
In hard rock/Heavy Metal there are many bands that can easily be called the best ever. Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, KISS, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Van Halen, and Motley Crue for instance can all be called the greatest band ever. This is not to knock any of those listed, I like every one of them too.
Just ask what kind of band is the best ever. Hair Metal. Glam. Death Metal, Finesse Metal. The list is nearly never ending.

All of the bands mentioned are definitely in the running.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned Creedence Clearwater Revival. The things that they did in the studio during the years of 1969 and 1970 was incredible. They are my favorite all-time band. They did not last very long but they had an incredible run when they were together and they released many hits that are still classics.
