Bipolar disorder is also known as Manic-Depressive disorder...
This means that a person cycles between periods of Mania (overly happy and energetic) and Depression. These changes can happen FAST too but it can be slow as well...
Basically, it is extreme mood swings... everyone has mood swings but those with bipolar disorder have them 100 times worse...
OH another thing is that there need not be a trigger either (something that sets them off that happens in thier lives). The changes can come for no reason at all and are usually strong enough to exert some amount of control over the person suffering, and everyone around them by extension.

I'm Bi-polar (also called Manic Depression) and if you are really interested in it check out the Book, An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness by Kay Redfield Jamison. I know a lot of people who during depression can not get out of bed. Also depression can cause encoding failure making it hard to recall events and especially to study.
During a manic episode thoughts come at extremely fast paised, suffer from insomnia, cant sit still, cant stop talking. feel at the TOP of the world untouchable. can cause you to act VERY carelessly spending money like theres no tomorrow, and pretty much engaging in acts you wouldnt normally do. you feel amazing really. Like a natural high. ^_^
In fact you should check out some brain scans during Mania or depression they look VERY diffrent from a scan of normal brain activity.

is a psychiatric diagnostic category describing a class of mood disorders in which the person experiences clinical depression and/or mania, hypomania, and/or mixed states. The disorder can cause great distress among those afflicted and those living with them. Bipolar disorder can be a disabling condition, with a higher-than-average risk of death through suicide.

You look up bipolar disorder. It is in the family of depression, but specifically, is when people go back and forth between major depression and mania. Mania is having way too much energy--no sleep, thinking and talking too fast, taking risks.

It is an electrical imbalance within the brain that can be balanced with proper food, exercise, clean thinking and reduced exposure to certain lighting ie, florescent bulbs, t.v., anything that has a strobing effect. Many times it is misdiagnosed when it is actually a result from mental reaction to a childhood that is not supportive of the individual. The neuropathways need to be healed with love and compassion for the self and forgivness for self and others.
