I usually pay no more than $100 to buy a prepaid phone, but then again I prefer a simple, reliable phone over one with lots of flash but weak battery life. Unless you talk a ton, the extra $20 per month that you shell out once you account for taxes and fees means you are paying well over $200 for the upgrade each time you renew your contract for a year.

You can't ..."barter".... on a phone it's not a used pinto. You pay for the amount of minutes that you use, ie, if you use only 300 min. a month then you can get a cheap plan but if you use 5000 min. a month you better get a higher rate plan or prepair for massive overage charges. It is kinda a give and take about where to go, the corp. stores typically give better service and know more about thier products but agent locations have more leway on their phone prices.
Me personnally i only pay 5 bucks a month for unlimited usage. but then again i'm in the cell industry and get all of my bills expensed.

I've been using prepaid "Virgin Mobile" for several years. I have to buy the phone outright and up-front (starting at $25 or so at Wal Mart, on up). Calls are $0.25/minute. $0.10/minutete after 10 minutes in a day, and you have to put $20 minimum into the account every three month to keep the number. Any unused money in the account "rolls-over" when kept active.
I wind up spending about $8 to $10 PER MONTH on my Virgin Mobile phone. (I obviously don't make/receive a lot of calls.) That's definitely cheaper than a line line for a limited number of calls.

You can purchase a new phone from your cell company at a reduced "upgrade" cost. However, I have found that the best thing to do is find the phone you want, then search for it on Ebay. You can find a new phone at the fracation of the price.

Cingular has deals on their online store. It depends on what you want. I upgraded recently for two phones and paid 18.00 activation for each.
