There are over 800 (yes, 800) kinds of seizures. It often takes a while to discover what works on the seizures in question...I am sorry if you have them or know someone who does; Please know that most people with seizures lead relatively normal lives once their seizures are controlled...

My husband was diagnosed with seizures around the beginning of this year after a car accident, and we've just recently started a therapy involving two types of medications, after trying two other medications by themselves and not having complete success with them. It's difficult, but there are so many different types of seizures and the ways seizures affect people is so different - it can be very frustrating, because it seems as though the doctor doesn't know what to do. The reason doctors will sometimes prescribe a variety of drugs instead of a single drug is because the drugs work in a different way. For example, my husband is currently on Trileptal and Keppra, and both work different ways. The Trileptal works to stop seizures before they start, and the Keppra works to keep the neurons in the brain from having the "long fires" that are what result in the seizure. So one works outside the brain, with the other functions that start the seizure process, and one works by stopping the process justbefore seizures occur. Hang in there, whether it's you or someone close to you having the seizures, it's a difficult process, I know, but it can be overcome.

Allison, the doctors have to try and find the right combination of medications and get the medication levels correct (they can find this out by doing a blood test). Even then, it may not stop the seizures permanently, but at least it will decrease the frequency.
