AARP management has a decided liberal bias in politics. It is advocating policies that help or protect senior citizens.
It championed a Medicare drug program. AARP advocates maintaining the Social Security status quo.

AARP sells insurance of all kinds. They publish a magazine and newsletter. They get money from advertisers.

So dues money and advertising revenue are used to persuade Congressmen to support AARP causes.

I am an AARP member, but I oppose their liberal biases. I read the magazine so I can keep up with what AARP management is up to.

They both have large numbers of members who vote and who donate money to political campaigns. Enough said.
